[Season 4] Episode 6: Power Ponies.... assemble
HELLOOO EVERYBODY and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews. As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review, we're suiting up for a sci-fi adventure in pop culture. However, before there are a FEW rules to go over before we can get started. First off, all contents within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it EVER, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if ANY of you notice ANY mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, please don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Power Ponies is the 6th episode in season 4 and the 71st episode overall. A collaborative effort between writers Meghan McCarthy, Charlotte Fullerton, and Betsy McGowen. The story follow the adventures of the mane 6 as they battle in a world straight of a fantasy novel. When Spike and the girls get sucked into an enchanted comic they find themselves in place of the main heroes, aka the Power Ponies. And if they wanna get back to Ponyville they'll have to face off against the teams archenemy, Mane - iac. But when the girls find themselves more than overwhelmed it's up to Spike to save the day and set the story right. Can he do it? Or will the sidekick curse be their downfall?
I've honestly been waiting seasons to finally tackle this episode and man am I underprepared. That aside I had fun watching this episode. Even though it was kinda meant to further poke fun at Spikes position in the group I think it also shows that even he has some greater purpose in the group. I also love how the writers and artists managed to fit so many references into the storyline. Most of which ranged from DC characters like Wonder Woman, the Flash, Batman & Robin, Green Lantern, and a few References to Marvels the Hulk, Thor, and Storm. On top of references to the Avengers, Powerpuff Girls, the Justice League, and Super Sentai.
Of course the quality part to this episode is how it teaches that a hero isn't defined by their powers but their ability to go beyond even when the odds are stacked against them. Most of all it also shows how you should never underestimate the unlikely. Sometimes what you least fear can come back in a big way.
Overall, this episode didn't have any real large flaws. The pace moderate and the general story was a tad short but nothing to really effect the general opinion. Hopefully, in a future episode we'll get to see the power ponies themselves team up with the mane 6 to takedown some kind of evil team up. Till then I'll be looking forward to the next episode and what it has to bring to the table.
Alright! This concludes my review of Power Ponies. In general, a nice episode that not only reflects positively on Spike but also appeals to comic and pop culture nerds all over. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in it. I give this episode a 10 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed this review. Be sure to leave a like if you did.
