Episode 16: Sonic Rainboom...an explosion of color

In todays review we break the sound barrier for an artistic explosion of wonder. Before we continue, let me lay out the rules. Episode 16: Sonic Rainboom was the first episode to give a small teaser to the history of both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. It also marked the first time we got a glimpse of the pegasus capital of Cloudsdale. Not to mention its the first Rainbow related episode to showcase the daredevils impressive skills.

My favorite take away from this episode was both the scenery and its connection to the refrence in the episodes climax. Modeling the cloud city after ancient Greece was quite a historical plus. What really tied it in was the subtle nod to the myth of Icarus and his wax wings. Though the myth did end on a... grimmer...note.

This episode also conveyed a huge lesson on motivation and support. Rainbow spent most of the episode doubting her own abilities and her own legacy. It didn't help that Rarity became so immersed in her own vanity to realize the real problem. In the end it took a major motivation for Rainbow to wake up and finally show what she could do.

Now while the episode wasn't bad it did have SOME issues. Both relating to specific characters. Rarity's vanity obsession and Rainbows ego. The one thing that continues to irk me are the overly exxagerated stereotypes. It just makes me feel bad for the characters. Unfortunately, I have no say in it...none of us do.

Alright! This concludes my review of episode 16. A good start to Rainbows journey to her dream. I reccomend to this mainly to any RD fans out there. I give Sonic Rainboom a 9 / 10.
