[Season 3] Episode 13: Magical Mystery Cure... for the problem at hoof

HELLOOO EVERYBODY and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review, we learn how friendship can cure even the strangest ailments. However, there are a few rules to go over before we get started. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it EVER, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if ANY of you notice ANY mistakes, please don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?

Magical Mystery Cure is the 13th and final episode of season 3 as well as the 65th episode overall. Written by co - creator M. A. Larson, the story was written as a play on the popular Beatles album "Magical Mystery Tour" and also holds the record for most musical numbers in a single episode. Twilight wakes one morning to find that the destinies of her closest friends have been jumbled up due to a powerful spell. The downside? She was the one who cast it. Now it's up to Twilight to finish the unfinished spell and rewrite things before it's too late. Can Twilight succeed where Starswirl himself failed? Or was the all just a ploy written up by a lazy princess?

... I'm not sure I can even quip about how much Tylenol I'll need after this train wreck. I mean it wasn't enough that the episode flat out kills Twilights best character quirks. But to fit so many spontaneous numbers into one single episode is just asking for a plotload of complaints. Specifically ones directed at how quickly Twilight went from this unique, carefully thought out character to this grand mary sue in the blink of an eye. And that's only because there was at least 1 well planned musical number towards the end of the episode.

At best, I'd say the lesson in this episode is that friendship is a power that can overcome any challenge. It's a magic that can neither be manipulated nor can it ever truly be controlled. And most off all it's a strong defense against the darkest days.

As much as I wanna rant in this paragraph I feel as though the episodes already said as much as it can. And generally speaking, that's just sad considering this was the finale to the season. Which begs the questions why end was season 3 only 13 episodes? And why did it feel so rushed rather than better planned out? One can only hope the answers to these questions and so many more can be found in the next oncoming season and beyond.

Alright! this concludes my review of Magical Mystery Cure. Overall, I'd recommend taking this episode in one go rather than trying to take it slow. Otherwise, you'll need to swallow an industrial bottle of Tylenol afterwards. I give this episode a 2 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review. Be sure to leave like if you did.
