Episode 7: Dragon Shy....fus RO SQUEE
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today we look at an episode about facing what we fear most. Before we continue let me lay out the ground rules. Firstly, all content in this blog is the express opinion of its author. It does not nor should it ever reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said lets begin, shall we?
Season 1 episode 7. Aptly titled "Dragonshy". Just reading the title makes you wanna dragon shout. Lets hope I don't take an arrow to the flank for this.
As the title implies this episodes moral is played out by that pink haired angel, Fluttershy. As the element of kindness Fluttershy's biggest feature is her soft and gentle nature. If there's an animal in need she's there to lend a caring hoof. However, its also her biggest weakness. Being who she is Fluttershy is often easily frightened. Even by the simplest things like her own shadow. Kinda surprising when she can body slam a grizzly and put a headlock on it.
While being afraid is normal for all creatures it can also be a big crutch when it comes to others. Which can lead to low self - esteem and a serious lack of self confidence. Often times the most sensitive people become easy targets for bullies because of it. Resulting in a shut - in life and self harm.
Unlike in real life. Fluttershy's friends don't belittle her because of her fears. Instead choosing to gentle and understanding about it. All except Rainbow Dash who questions Fluttershys usefulness periodically through their journey. Kinda makes you question their friendship.
The lesson in this episode gets right to the point. Its okay to be afraid. Everyone has fears of their own. Just don't let it rule your life. Sometimes you have to face your fears head on to protect what matters most to you. Like how in the end Fluttershy swallowed her nerves to confront the dragon and save the day. Taking a big hoofstep forward in her character development as well.
Alright! That concludes my review of Dragonshy. I liked the fact the episode focused on a common lesson with one of my favorite ponies. I could have however done without Dash's negative attitude and Fluttershy being ignored in the beginning. I recommend this episode in need of a confidence boost. In the end I give Dragonshy a decent 9 / 10. I hope you guys enjoyed the review.
