My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Issue #64

HELLOOO EVERYBODY and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review, we're taking a step back in time to visit the fashion flings of yesteryear. However, there are a FEW rules to go over before we can get started. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it EVER, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if ANY of you notice ANY mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, please don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?

Friendship is Magic #64 is the 64th issue of IDW Publishing's main series. Written by Thom Zahler and accompanied by artist Andy Price, the story follows Rarity and Fluttershy on a trip back to Manehattan. While on a trip back to fashion capital of Equestria Rarity is shocked to find out old fashions have returned. Leaving her with only one choice. Revisit her fashionable roots. Meanwhile, Fluttershy learns she might bitten off more than she can chew when she opened her animal shelter. Will both mares succeed in making their own paths? Or will they get swept up with the times?

So, first off. Hello all to all my possible readers. New season and a new comic review. And with it we have Fluttershy and Rarity both facing a similar problems but from different perspectives. Fluttershy's caught up stressing over all the little details she missed opening up while Rarity is caught up on the mistakes of the past. The problem is that both of them forget just how much they've accomplished since then. For starters Fluttershy's habitat has helped to reduce the need for constant animal care as well as made a safe place for creatures in the everfree to live and thrive without being afraid for their lives. While Rarity, the queen of fashion, she's found brilliant and unique ways to turn a simple clothe canvas into a wearable piece of mobile artwork. I think they might have just been overthinking the issue to be honest. Which, frankly, anypony might do given the sudden situation they can be put in.

That being said I feel the main lesson in this issue might be about learning to blaze your own trail, as some people say. Take fashion for instance. More than anything trends WILL repeat. But that doesn't mean you have to as well. Learn to put your own spin on the classics or at best try to improve on them and make them a wave for the future. As for Fluttershy's case I think she had it right by bringing up a program to help others interested in animal care. Sometimes the best path to growing is by taking what you know and passing it on to others. It helps others what to do and what not to do when approaching a new venture or how they can find their own path in it.

Aside from the stale references to old fashions and the stories slow pace I guess this issue is okay. Granted I'm not one for fashion of course but admittedly Andy Price did an amazing job breathing new life into such old fashions. And overall I was interested in so many classic references to both music artists and movie stars. Though I am hoping for a more interesting story in the next issue...oh wait... It's a celestia issue...

Alright! This concludes my review of issue 64. Overall a meh at best but not a bad one. I guess I can recommend this for all my rarishy fans. I give this issue an 8 / 10.
