Vinyl and Octavia: University Days by DawnFade
HELLOOO EVERYBODY and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review, we're taking a look at how a popular ship first began. However, there are a FEW rules to go over before we can get started. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it EVER, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if ANY of you notice ANY mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, please don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Vinyl and Octavia: University Days is a 22 chapter fanfic written by DawnFade. The story follows the octascratch ship before it was even a thing. Have you ever wondered how a party animal Dj and a Duchess of Classical could ever fall in love? Join Vinyl and Octavia as the survive college, tests, and romance together. Together they'll have to face hurdles ranging from meddling tutors and friends up to disapproving family members. Will they take things the whole mile? Or will the friend zone be the last stop for this shipfic?
So, Octascratch is one of many fan favorite ships in MLP history. This story, of course, is one of many tales about how the dj met the cellist and, frankly, it's an interesting one to say the least. I myself originally found the story on youtube by a fanfic reader named Astro Brony myself. Unfortunately, both the writer and yourutber have since either vanished or have terminated any use of their accounts. Even so, the story is still a nice Romeo and Juliet take to a favorite ship.
I think what impressed me most about this fanfic was it's positive message about relationships. Sometimes, love can be quite literally a battlefield. Often times you'll find yourself struggling against things like parental approval, social opinions, or even common similarities between yourself and your significant other. But in the end some things are better worth fighting for. Because when it's all said and done a relationship can only get stronger after facing so many hurdles on the road of life.
While I am fan of slice of life romance stories the biggest problem to this story is how stale the theme is. Which is often the downfall of all Romeo and Juliet love stories. In this case of course it was Dj meets Cellist, Dj and Cellist shack up, and finally Dj and Cellist end up in bed together. A heartwarming kind of story but still out of date in a modern sort of tone. There is of course a single side story to this, though I only recommend it for my older readers as it does take a more mature route with things. Hopefully, if anyone else picks up this story we'll get a lot more to character perspectives than what the original writer, DawnFade, had given us.
Alright! This concludes my review of Vinyl and Octavia: University Days. An interesting Romeo and Juliet take on a famous fan ship. I recommend this to any OctaScratch fans. I give this fic am 8/ 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also, don't forget to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review? Leave it in the comments section down below.
