My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Isuue #65
HELLOOO EVERYBODY and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review, we learn how even hero's have to rely on others to save everyone. However, there are a FEW rules to go over before we can get started. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it EVER, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if ANY of you notice ANY mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, please don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Queen for One Less Day is the 65th issue of IDW Publishing's main comic series. Written by Thom Zahler and accompanied by artist Andy Price, the story follows Princess Celestia as she commits to a century long tradition. After dawning an enchanted disguise Celestia takes to Equestria in order gauge the opinion of her people. A tradition which Celestia has done for several years without a hitch. But when the amulet powering her secret identity gets stolen she has to turn to a familiar ally to learn just what she's been wanting to hear. Will Celestia find the culprit? Or is she stuck as a Pegasus forever?
Okay, firstly I honestly have to applaud IDW for doing something Hasbro is still having slight problems with. To make something that puts the ever radiant sunbutt in such a vulnerable position is a mighty feet. Especially given her otherwise perfectionist archetype. That aside I'm happy how this issue sorta turned out. The artwork was nice and the story itself bore an otherwise sound lesson. Though Celstia's was slightly played down I feel like it's the best position for her to be in to actually make a decent story around. And that, for sure, is far more than a milestone.
In terms of lessons I feel this story's mainly trying to say that it's not easy to be a hero. You constantly seek to make a positive impact to people in the hopes they can look to you when they have a problem they need solved. But no matter how hard try you can't always be their for those who need you most of all. That's why it's always best to impart wisdom on those look up to you. And hopefully when they get older they can take that knowledge and reach out where they can help most of all.
My strongest, if any, complaint for this issue is the fact there's obviously another "all-powerful" evil amulet out there besides the alicorn amulet. Not only that but it also contains ancient changeling magic. On top of that Celestia's admitted to doing this before. Which means she's literally gone out flaunting a possible nuclear level threat around her perfectly disguised neckline for any...thing... to get at it. And people question why we prefer her sister more? Overall, I'd say more than anything this issue just proves that even perfectionists types like Celestia aren't immune to making obvious mistakes. Not to mention having a lot more to learn about herself and the ponies she cares so deeply for.
Alright! This concludes my review of Queen for One Less Day. I won't say it's a perfect issue but I'm willing to recommend it for going beyond what Hasbro is willing to do. I give this issue an 8 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also, don't forget to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review?
