My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic issues 13 - 14
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. In todays review we go on a highseas adventure with our favorite pony crew. Before we continue let me lay out the ground rules. Firstly, all content in this blog is the express opinion of its author. It does not nor should it ever reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said let's move on, shall we?
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic issues 13 and 14. A two part issue set about the gangs first overseas adventure. A tale only a disney fan could love. Eat your heart Johnny Depp.
Writer Heather Nuhfer and Artist Brenda Hickey team together to make an amazing adventure ripped straight from a Disney script. Just like the previous issues the theme adds a bit more to the stories excitement. Though cobsidering the shows target audience was little girls having a pirate theme thrown in is a big surprise. I guess not every girl has to dream of frilly dresses and princess crowns. No offense girls.
After our heroines set up for a beach side vacation it's interupted by the arrival of Jack Sparrows ponysona Hoofbeard. One short explanation later the team set sail with the good captain for adventure. Their destination? The Gallopinghost islands. For those who don't know, this was a reference to the famous Gallopagos(?) Islands. A fantastic vacation spot for couples also known for its native marine life.
Being no stranger to pirate themes in pop culture I loved the way these issues payed tribute to them. Which is mainly why I wasn't surprised to see four members of the strawhat crew making a cameo. Just shows that the crew was dedicated to finding One Piece.
Aside from its seafaring theme I think the main lesson here is a tough one to swallow. Letting go can be hard. Especially when it involve something or someone you love. Fluttershy feared losing her friend Gil even though she knew it was time and Hoofbeard let his love for a fair mermare drive him insane. In the end everypony learned a valuable piece of wisdom. If you love something, set it free. If it comes back it was meant to be.
My only complaints here have to do with where this story follows. This takes place AFTER Twilights coronation. You know. Where she becomes an all powerful alicorn? The kind that could easily settle things with a stomp of her royal hoof. Plus I'm pretty sure Twilight has read every pirate story in the library. Yet with all that knowledge and power she was still duped into following a love crazed stallion on a wild goose chase for some fish tale. Kinda makes you wonder how low princess qualifications are these days.
Alright! That's my review of issues 13 and 14. A fun read for pirate fans everywhere. Definitely recommend it. I give these two issues a nautical 9 / 10. Now before I close out this review I wanted to make a quick announcement. For those of you who watch pony reviews on youtube you may have heard the heartbreaking news. I'm talking of course of ponytube celeb DaWilstanator. Recently Will, or Thespio as some call him, has suffered a great loss in his family. The death of his beloved mother. Right now Will and his family have a gofundme going to help pay for funeral costs and various other expenses. Whether you donate or just send him some kind words your support would mean a lot to him and his family. Be sure to check out his latest video for details. Anyways I hope you guys enjoyed this review. Feel free to leave a like if you did and if you have any suggestions leave them in the comments below. Also don't forget to subscribe for more updates.
