Cultures Contemplations: Celestial Defect

HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today I lay down some choice words regarding the solar superiority. Before we begin, let's review the rules. Firstly, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?

Last week I brought up the CMC and the impactive role they play in the series. This week I thought I'd climb higher up the ladder to discuss a character who's past helped to shape Equestria as we know it. I'm talking, of course, about the solar diarch herself, Celestia.

Celestia has been a main influence on many others throughout generation 4. Whether it was as an enemy, a parental figure, or even as a goddess. So many ponies throughout Equestria have praised Celestia for giving them purpose.

Now I know what your asking. Culture, if she's done so much then why are you spotlighting her? Well the key word here is "done".

For all the folklore surrounding her Celestia rarely puts in the effort to actually earn her praises. Throughout the series thus far Celestial has been shown as nothing more than a political figure and an overexaggeration of obsessive perfection. That's not something fans should praise.

Granted, Celestia does have her charm and beauty. But you can't really get far on looks alone. This is an issue that keeps fans like myself from enjoying her character. In fact, if you compare Celestia to her otherwise underrated sister, Luna, you can easily understand why.

For starters, there's Celestia's core personality. While being a princess IS a serious profession it doesn't mean you have act so wound up. In fact, it's been very rarely that we've seen Celestia act like... well...Celestia. One example was in "Make new Friends, But Keep Discord" where instead of scolding the lord of chaos she smiled at the disasters he caused.

Next up there's Celestia's need to depend on others. Ever since the series premiered Celestia has always relied on Twilight and her friends whenever threatens Equestria. Kind of let down considering how Equestria praises her like some omnipotent deity. Ironic considering whenever she DID step in to handle things it always backfired.

Then there's her lack of redeeming flaws. Celestia as a character has been known to shine brighter than the sun itself. So bright that her flaws seem more like qualities by comparison. Making her less relatable to a lot of fans.

Finally, for all her talk of her"little ponies" Celestia is rarely ever shone interacting with them on a personal level. Unlike her sister Luna who acts more one - on one. Celestia acts solely on political position and not enough on a more social standing.

Personally? I don't really blame Lauren Faust for how Celestia turned out. I blame Hasbro and Larson for making her so tightly knit without leaving any room for any real development. I feel that Faust had stayed with the team Celestia might have come 100% better than what she is now. Unfortunately, as the series is winding into it's 7th season, I think the chance to salvage Celestia's character has long since gone with the wind.

Alright! This concludes my review on Celestia. Personally...I want to like her so much. But given what's been said I don't think I'll get that chance. Hope you guys enjoyed this.
