Cultures Contemplations: Shimmering in the Sunlight
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, we're taking a look at everyones favorite bacon haired beauty. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
So, for those who've been keeping up with me. There have been times when a character, or group, has caught my attention in some way or another. Recently, one such character has caught my eye. Thanks in part to the community. That character being, of course, the princess of the bacon wave herself. Sunset Shimmer.
First off, I wanna discuss Sunsets history in MLP and what lead her to where she is now. Back in 2014, IDW released an annual entitled " The Fall of Sunset Shimmer". In it, the story detailed a brief history of Sunsets life in Equestria. As well as her enrollment as Celestia's personal protege'.
According to the story, Sunset was originally being groomed as the possible bearer of the Element of Magic. Of course, though, this wasn't the case as pages later Sunsets own impatience drives to run away to a whole other dimension without understanding the gravity of her own situation. Which leads me to my next point.
Sunsets attitude, over the course of the EQG franchise, has shown a significant change from the initial comic issue. Meaning that Sunsets intentions might have been completely misjudged from the beginning. Perhaps even she herself misjudged her own desires.
Personally, I feel that Sunset shares a common theme with characters like Starlight Glimmer and Princess Luna. All three characters felt neglected, alone, or underappreciated. In Sunsets case, she felt like her talents were going unnoticed by the pony she idolized most of all. And like Luna, she desired the need to be treated like an equal. Rather than a student or child.
Of course, all this eventually changes thanks in part to the magic of friendship. A magic that Sunset never really took the time learn. Which, coincidentally, is what lead to this chain of events in the first place. A strange thought but nonetheless true if you think about it.
Finally, Sunsets role in both the films and comics. Which, quite frankly, is what spurred this whole discussion to begin with. Ironic, huh?
Now like I said earlier, Sunset's about in the same boat here. Just like Starlight and Luna, Sunset has potential to be more than what she is. Which, atm, is more of a group mentor rather than instructor. Sunset has the ability to be a true and fair leader we she needs to be. The only thing keeping her back is her own fear if what could happen. An irrational fear it may be but given her first encounter you kinda understand.
In conclusion, i kinda think Sunset is one of the most relatable characters in the series. She gives people a chance at hope while teaching others life lessons of her own to learn from. Similar to Princess Luna. I hope that one day we get to see her appear in the series. Maybe even have her mend old wounds. Maybe Hasbro will give it a shot. Only time wil tell.
Alright! This concludes todays entry. Hope you guys enjoyed it. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also, don't forget to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review?
