Cultures Contemplations: Shining in the Starlight
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today we'll be spotlighting a character who's gotten a lot of recent buzz as of season 7. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin,. Shall we?
First off, let me state I am in no way biased towards Starlight Glimmer. Homestly, my opinion is more in between as a fan. And while she does her redeeming qualities fans are still divided on role in thr story so far. And with good reason.
First off, lets look at her background. Starlight Glimmer grew up in a small mountain village. As a child, Starlight had a close friend by the name of Sunburst. The two were inseperable. That is until the day Sunburst got his cutie mark. Feeling abandoned, Starlight grew up resenting cutie marks. Using her magic, she stripped away the cutie marks of all the ponies in the village. Convincing them individuality was a sin and they were better off as equals.
In a nutshell....not the best start for a character. I mean Starlight essentially became a ponified version of Hitler. What made it worse was why she did it. Loneliness. Simply put, Starlight because she was scared of being alone. In hindsight, not quite the best motivation for her actions.
Next up is her role in the main story. After the events of season five Starlight is graciously placed under the care of Twilight Sparkle as her student. Learning about frienship while making meaningful bonds with the ponies she meets. Eventually graduating in the season 7 opener after successfully saving Equestria and freeing the changeling race.
Now this is what really hurts her character. Much like Sunset Shimmer in the EQG films Starlight Glimmers redemption was poorly executed and rushed. There was no real struggle. No real drama to build up from. And frankly? Viewers just didn't care for it.
Lastly, Starlights direction in the future. As of the start of season 7 Starlight has become a larger part of the series. Similar to her mentor Twilight, Starlight lives her day learning and applying her lessons in friendship. All to become a more positive character in the long run.
To summarize, the reason the fandom is so mixed on her character is because she's still developing it. I feel that personally Starlights future is more preset than unpredictable. Considering what's happened so far it's safe to say Starlight WILL be getting hex own element in a future season. Much like how Sunset, I see Starlight representing the element of redemption, love, or forgiveness.
In closing. Whether you love her or hate her. Starlight is here to stay.
