Cultures Contemplations: The Man, The Myth, The Mitch
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, we'll be talking a bit about one of MLP's most iconic names and how they have been viewed over the years. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Now to start off this is not going to be about Lauren Faust. Though she is the most iconic member of the crew, there is only one name that stands out below hers. Someone who's been a huge part of the show since its earliest days. That person, of course, is none other than Mitch himself. Mr. M. A. Larson.
Before I get too far ahead. Let me point out that this will not be a roast of any kind. Frankly, I myself have mixed emotions regarding Larson and his contributions to MLP. Honestly, it's a bit confusing given the reactions some fans often have. But that's why I wanna voice my own opinion on Larson today.
M. A. Larson, or Mitchell Aaron Larson, is an American screenwriter and author. Som of his accomplishments include Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, My Gym Partner's a Monkey, Gravity Falls, and Littlest Pet Shop. His most notable however was his work with Lauren Faust regarding Friendship is Magic. And that's what gets me.
Growing up, cartoons were a big part of my life. As I got older, my tastes changed to more foreign shows, or anime. But at the same time I'd check out shows like Dexters Lab, KND, Foster,s, and many more. At the time I rarely payed attention to the end credits so I was a bit surprised to hear of Larsons other works years later. After the shows go off the air.
What shocks me the most is that, given Larsons track record regarding work quality, Larson still manages to recieve quite a bit of negative feedback. Some of the episodes he's helped with or written for were actually rather interesting to say the least. As were some of his other previous works.
To sum it up. Although he doesn't get as much relevancy as Lauren Faust, aka the Fausticorn, Larson has still managed to make his mark on MLP. As well as its evergrowing and everexpanding brony community. And, although part of me says not to, I have to respect Mitch Larson as both an icon in the series and a role model for generations to come.
