Corpse Bride
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, we see if a heart can love...after it's stopped beating. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Corpse Bride is a British - American stop - motion - animated musical fantasy film produced by Tim Burton. It was filmed in 2005 and set in the Victorian Era of Europe. The story is about young Victor Van Dort, voiced by Johnny Depp, as he and his family prepare for an arranged marriage to Victoria Everglot, voiced by Emily Watson. Plans derail, however, after Victor places the ring on the hand of a corpse bride named Emily, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter. Now stuck in a rather unforseen marriage Victor has to figure out a way to undo everything and make it back to his bride to be. Will he make it in time? Or will he lose Victoria forever?
Okay. So another Tim Burton movie with Johnny Depp. That aside I rather liked the movie. The story was decently intriguing and the dialogue was pleasantly enjoyable. It was also fun seeing so many references to historical icons like Napoleon Bonaparte, Peter Lorre, and Sammy Davis Jr. Especially the character Bonejangles, who was voiced by former Oingo Boingo vocalist Danny Elfmann.
Personally, I feel the story of the Corpse Bride, in a way, shows how true love can often lead to many things. Rarely couples fall in love at first sight. Like how Victor fell for Victoria. But, much like Emily, love can also end in tragedy. Caused from a broken heart and a blind desire to be wed.
Ultimately, the film recieved a vast amount of positive reviews upon its release. Pulling in 117.2 million at the box office. The only real tragedy is there is no full ending to the film. Meaning there's still the question of what happened after everything in the end. Could a sequel in the future? Likely not but only time will tell.
Alright! This concludes my review of Corpse Bride. Truly a ghoulish romance for all ages. I recommend this to all my readers. I give this film an 8 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review.
