[Season 2] Episode 4: Luna Eclipsed...Even the most Shining Stars can cast the darkest shadows
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, we're celebrating the night of nights as we load up our goodybags for a most fesitive tradition. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Lunar Eclipsed is the second seasonal slice of life episode in the series. Written by M. A. Larson, it stars Princess Luna in her first full length appearance since the Friendship is Magic two - parter. The story takes place during the first Nightmare Night since her return. Similar to Halloween, the festivities are filled with games, treats, and excitement alike. But things change when the lunar diarch pays the town a surprise visit. Can Twilight help solve Lunas problem? Or will the ghosts of Lunas past wreak havoc on everyones fun?
I loved this episode for more than just the obvious reasons. Yes, I am a big Luna fan but that's only part of why this episode is so amazing. Luna Eclipsed is by far the lowest point in Luna's life. But at the same time it's also the point where she makes a fresh start. Meaning rather than going down the same path she has the freedom to be reinvented and developed into a better character. Unlike other characters who often hit rock bottom too late and just fade away.
I feel like the lesson here is that fitting in can be difficult. In Luna's case, she had been gone too long and missed out on so much. While the world had changed she had become trapped in the same place and unable to move forward or adapt. But that's what makes friendship so rewarding. It means always having someone there who can guide you through it all. Supporting you as you learn and grow every step of the way.
In a way, this episode was bad in a good way. As I stated earlier ago it was essentially Luna's low point as a character. Meaning it was an episode showcasing Luna at her worst. But rather than make her into a bad character, like most Rainbow Dash episodes do, I think it helped to garner most of her fanbase. It showcased Luna as less of an imposing goddess and more of a frail pony just looking for companionship. Making her a more relatable character to fans in the long run.
Alright! This concludes my review of Luna Eclipsed. An exceptional episode for an exceptional character. Well worth my recommendation. I give this episode a 10 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review.
