Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, prop up your feet as we get ready for a close shave of the vengeful kind. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is 2007 British - American period musical horror film. Directed by Tim Burton, it was an adaption of the original musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. The story follows Sweeney Todd, played by Johnny Depp, after he returns from a forced exile overseas. Broken and driven by vengeance Sweeney embarks on a killing spree in order to satiate his thirst for revenge. But will it be enough to fill the decaying void in his broken soul?
I think I should start this off by stating I don't exactly enjoy musicals. While they serve a certain purpose, I feel that a story rarely benefit from so many spontaneous numbers. Surprisingly, this movie manages it quite well. All the while keeping viewers moderately engrossed in a story full of thrills and chills.
My favorite part, however, was the decorum of the setting in which the film took place. The Victorian period was by far Londons most illustrious era in its long history. The gothic architecture and rich culture helped to paint a perfect tapestry for this bloody tale.
Now I'll give the film its dues for its perfect portrayal of the original story. But that's about as far as I can go. Personally, I think the songs and musical numbers could have been planned. Not to mention there wasn't quite enough build up to the climax. Biased opinions aside, the film was exceptionally written and well accomplished. Making an incredible $152.2 million at box offices worldwide.
Alright! This concludes my review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Truely a thrilling tale worthy of its numerous awards. As well as my personal recommendation. I give this film a 9 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also, don't forget to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review?
