Cultures Contemplations: Religion in Pop Culture
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today, we're taking a risk to talk about a subject that has quite a negative buzz in popular media. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Okay, let me start all of this off by saying that in no way do I support religious persecution. A person is free to choose their own path regardless of how it effects those around them. And it's not up to anyone else to make that decision. That being said, it grinded my gears when a brony I met in an online social media group had to leave the fandom because of their relatives. Yeah. NOT COOL PEOPLE!
In pop culture today one of the biggest misconceptions is how it can effect one's religious background. In some cases like the one above fans are often peer pressured to abandon the fandom in order to "save their souls in the eyes of god". This is because most devout practicioners often claim certain shows or fandoms as sinful or "the work of the devil" when in reality they aren't. Because of this belief there are often groups of brainwashed cultists and overzealous worshippers trying to get shows, movies, and / or comics changed to fit more "wholesome" values. A concept in entertainment that died out long ago when popular media was less about the minority and more about the majority.
Now I don't disagree that you shouldn't abandon your faith entirely. After all, everyone deserves to follow what they believe in. I just feel that you should learn what's right about your religion and what's just a bunch of lies. A lot of the things we blame on the media are just fictional tales dreamt up by false prophets to rob people of their money. Before you go believing them I suggest you pick up your bible and read it yourself. You might just find that the truth isn't what you thought it was.
In conclusion, stop calling pop culture sinful. If someone wants to be into something you don't like then let them. It's not your decision to make. And it never will be.
