Cultures Contemplations: How OC's are Born
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Prepare your pencils and open your textbooks as today we go over some basics on OC 101. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
OC creation is a large part of any fandom. Whether in art or fanfictions they serve as representations of their creator., some moreso than others. Often times they get overlooked for specific reasons like lack of creativity or unoriginality. Today we're going over some do's and don'ts when coming up with your OC.
First off, you have to pick a character type that either resembles you or the type of character you have in mind. It doesn't even have to be canon to the show. A lot of times come up with their own mash-ups of types. This can be a good way to allow more for creativity while still keeping yourself limited to what each species can and can't do.
Next up, you have to pick a color scheme that works. This mostly applies to artwork but can also up in fanfics to help readers better imagine the character. Most people usually try to pick colors that appeal to them, and that's fine. But keep in mind that the colors have to fit well in the final project. This usually means characters with monotone colors like red and black get lots of hate. Mostly because of how edgy they come off.
Thirdly, the backstory. Whether you're creating a persona or an regular OC for story purposes keep in mind that the backstory is crucial. It's what can either save or doom an OC. Depending on how it's written.
Last but not least the most important thing of all. Have fun with it. Don't be afraid of negative criticism. It's a natural part of any fandom and can help you grow as a part of it.
Alright! This concludes my thoughts on OC's. Hope you guys enjoyed this. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also be sure to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review?
