My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic issues #43 - 45
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium of Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Get ready as we dive deep inside to face our deepest obsessions. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
MLP: FIM comics issues 43 - 45, aka Ponies of Dark Water, is a three issue arc from writer Thom Zahler and artist Tony Fleecs. The story starts off with the mane 6 returning home from saving the day. After an unscheduled stop at a mysterious spring things take a turn for the worse when Twilight and her friends start acting against their nature. It's up Luna, Spike, and the CMC to save the day and hopefully set things right.
I like these issues because to me they answer question I had regarding a previous arc, Revelations. What would the mane 6 be like as villains? What would they be driven by? How would that play out? Given the result, I think this arc painted that picture quite well.
I feel like the primary lesson here is often overlooked by people in higher positions. Don't let your ambitions dictate how you act. It's okay to be passionate about something. As long as you don't obsess over it. It can cloud your judgement and blind you to the truth.
In summary, I liked this arc. It answered important personal questions and does well experimenting with the what if's. Personally I also liked evil Pinkie's reference to the Joker. Though how Rarity can compare to Dr. Doom confuses me. Though Marvel an DC references aren't always easy to explain.
Alright! This concludes my review of Ponies of Dark Water. Loved seeing the mane 6 villains. I recommend this to everyone looking for a fun read. I give issues 43 - 45 a 9.5 / 10. Hope you guys enjoyed the review. Be sure to leave a like if you did. Also don't forget to follow us for more updates. Got a suggestion for a review? Leave it in the comments below.
