Cultures Contemplations: Ships Ahoy
HELLOOO and welcome to Cultures Compendium Reviews! As always, I am Culture Shock. Your guide to all things cultural in Equestria and beyond. Today we're going over a crucial part of any fandom and discussing some of the does and don'ts most fans ignore. Before we begin, let's review the rules. First off, all content within this blog is expressly the opinion of its author. It does not, nor should it ever, reflect the overall opinion of the fandom. Lastly, if any of you notice any mistakes, be it typos or otherwise, don't hesitate to let me know. With that said, let's begin. Shall we?
Let me start by pointing out that in no way am I against the idea of shipping. I myself have a few ships that I support and others I don't. In my honest opinion there is no " One True Ship " for any character. What there is however are ships that just don't work for important reasons. And that's why I want to discuss it.
Shipping, for lack of a proper term, occurs when two characters are paired together in some for other with intent to either create or emphasis a special bond between the two. Whether it's meant to be taken as romantic, family, or friendly. Most of which are usually meant as romantic.
The main thing to keep in mind about shipping is how well the characters know one another. Have they met before? How often have they communicated? Shipping characters that've had next to no interaction, significant or otherwise, usually spells disaster. And that can lead to a whole lot of trouble.
What makes or breaks a ship is usually how well it goes over with the fandom. Of course not everyone disagrees with a shipping. However, there are those who can be extra fickle about things. Like how bronies tore into the Flashlight and Twimber ships. Those people are usually take things too literally and act immature because of it.
Most important of all shipping should be left mostly to fans. While production companies like Hasbro are wizards at dropping subtle and unintentional hints they don't always make the best ships. Mostly because they usually don't listen to the fans. Something a successful company would do if they wanted to improve ratings.
In a nutshell, I feel like shipping is an essential to fandom both in and out of pop culture. Not only is it fun to do but it also helps to improve the fandom and promotes creative and unique content. I can't imagine a fandom surviving without it. And I hope I never do for a long time.
